How was the Day of the Journalist born in Paraguay?
The Day of the Journalist in Paraguay is celebrated on April 26 because on this date the anniversary of the first publication of "El Paraguayo Independiente" is commemorated; first newspaper that was published throughout the Republic of Paraguay and that began to circulate on April 26, 1845 . This fact served to affirm national sovereignty.
This newspaper was born thanks to the then president, Carlos Antonio López, who promoted its creation in order to spread ideas that would make it possible to defend the independence of Paraguay against Argentina, who insisted on denying it.
However, after 7 years of uninterrupted publications, on Saturday September 18, 1852, the publication of the newspaper with its 118th edition was suspended. This was because finally, the Argentine Confederation had recognized the total independence of our country.
Another event that was ratified on April 26 as the date to celebrate Journalist's Day was the murder in 1991, in the middle of the street, of the journalist Santiago Leguizamón by the organized mafia linked to drug trafficking on the border with Brazil.
