Every August 22 the Paraguayan Folklore Day is celebrated in our beloved country. A special event that seeks to celebrate and exalt the rich cultural heritage and traditions that characterize us as a nation. Here we will tell you how this day was born and much more.
How was Folklore Day born?
Paraguayan Folklore Day is celebrated on August 22 because on this same date, Unesco established World Folklore Day in 1960. This day was chosen in memory of August 22, 1846 , the day in which was published in a letter in London in which the term "Folklore" was used for the first time.
This term comes from two words in the English language. One is "folk" which means people or people, and the other is "lore", which means science. Therefore, folklore is the knowledge of the people or the town.
Folklore or Folklore, is a word that is associated with different aspects of the culture of a country, which are transmitted from generation to generation through the passage of time orally or in writing. Within these are grouped beliefs, myths, legends, ceremonies, dances, music, stories, crafts, typical gastronomy, literary compositions, customs and much more.
All of this constitutes the cultural heritage of a country and provides national identity. In Paraguay, the Day of Folklore is celebrated, among other things, the Guaraní language, the Paraguayan harp, the tereré, natural medicine and the ñe'enga.
